Realised projects

2011

In 2011 we financed 30% of the building costs for the Secondary School in Andaung Chenh while the balance was financed from 2 German foundations. The building activities were finished in time to start the schooling for the new school year 2010/2011 end of oktober 2011. Now the scholars can start their primary education and can follow up with their secondary school on the same place.

Tineke van den Beek as the Don Bosco building coordinator wrote us the following:

Dear benefactors,
The construction workers, some are siblings of our students, did an incredible job from beginning to end. Don Bosco Andaung Chenh secondary school looks magnificent! Please see attached file. The remainder: only little jobs and painting parts of in and outside walls and pillars with sand colour Spectro paint. Completion, October 2011. Thanks to Dutch benefactors, Stichting Scholenproject Cambodja Rotterdam, we can start to furnish classrooms with professional single desks and black boards.
Attached you find the completion report and accounting summary . We are very grateful for your generosity towards Cambodian youth. Your support is helping them to break out of poverty, illiteracy and ignorance and receive hope...

Best regards from all of us.
Sincerely yours,
Tineke

2010

In the beginning of 2010 we started a fundraising campaign for the reconstruction of the Technical School of Don Bosco after the earthquake which hit Haiti.

Furthermore we were able to finance the building material for a new school building with 6 class rooms in Chenh Cheang (provincie Takeo) together with the foundation De Brug and their Cambodian sister foundation Spie-en. This project was co-financed by NCDO.

12 class rooms for the Don Bosco literacy center in Andaung Chenh, Battambang

Newsletter Don Bosco Literacy center »»

Since 1999 the Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia in Battambang operates two literacy centers. Initially these centers offered during a four years training the basic of education to the youth who has never before attanded any school nor followed any education. Until than the children had no other choice than work together with their parents in the nearby stone factories to earn some money for the family needs. They were paid not more than 0,50 US$ a day!

Construction of school in Andaung Chenh.

When Don Bosco started these two centers they begin to talk and convince the factory owners and the families of the children that there had to be done something about the childrens education for the best of their own and the countries future. A first step was that the children were allowed to attent school for some hours a day after their work; later they were allowed to work for half a day and go to school the afternoon and finally a stage was reached that the children could attend a complete four years course after which they could attent and fit into a normal school. Todays situation is even progressed further so that the children do not have to work anymore but are able to start directly with a normal school without attending a literacy center any more. Therefore Don Bosco was asked by the local government to change the literacy center into a basic school for the future and Don Bosco has asked our foundation for the funding of this new school with 12 class rooms. The old buildings will be used in the future for a kitchen and a store room for agricultural machines which are necessary for the future practical lessons in agriculture which will be part of the new school system as well.

In Holland we have been able to sign a co-finance agreement with IMPULSIS (a joint venture of Church in action, ICCO and EDUKANS) which means that IMPULSIS will double all donations which SSCR is able to receive. The total budget comes to 81.756 US $ or 56.383 Euro half of which we have to raise funds for ourself and the other half will than be doubled by IMPULSIS.

2008

In Holland our foundation worked on the fundraising for a new Primary School for Andaung Chenh of 10 class rooms + library + teacher room. In Cambodja the CMAC did clear the building site of old mines of which they found and destroyed 8 explosives successfully.

6 classroom school in Onlong Kropae
Via the Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia SSCR received the request to finance the building of a new 6 classroom school in Onlong Kropae. The teachers, school committee and local community as well as ministry of education have all approved the construction and will provide the ground for free. SSCR adopted this plan and now tries to finance this new school and two toilets in the small village of Onlong Kropae, 85 km outside of Sihanoukville. Here are 74 families living with in total 380 people. 200 children are going to school today in a wooden 2 classroom building in 3 different sessions and receive lessons by 3 young teachers.

We want to add toilets to the school and extend the school by this new 6 class building so that the classes can be smaller and the lessons can be given in two sessions by more teachers. On top of it can the teachers in future live in the former old wooden building instead of one small bamboo hut where they are living together today.

The Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia will be supervising the construction which will be done by the local villagers themselves together with a professional building company.

All donations will be doubled by the co-finance organisation NCDO

The builders had quite some difficulties in bringing the building material and equipment and their workmen to the deserted village due to heavy rainfall and a sandy road in a very bad condition which was nearly completely destroyed by the rainpoor. But finally the school was in time ready for the new schoolyear 207/2008 and teachers and students welcomed the new and especially dry building very, very much.

The local authorities did not only provided the land free of charge and will pay the salaries of the three teachers but also provided for the first time the school furniture as well. A welcomed step in the direction of acceptance of their own local responsibility for the education in their district! As a sideeffect we had some extra financial means left to extend the project by a toilet group and 2 sportfields: one foot- and one volleybalfield. This extra parts of the project were completed in februari 2008 and with it the school project Onlong Kropae has been completed and can be accounted for towards the Dutch co-finance organisation NCDO.

Perhaps the most important effect of our project was not only to have a good and dry schoolbuilding but it seems that the local authorities have noticed the problem of this remote village and have in the meantime repaired the access road to the main road so that the village is accessible during the rain season as well. Furthermore has another NGO showed their interest in this region and started to build a small health centre and a Thai company decided to invest into a sugar factory so that there will be more work places created. In that way has our small school project brought a lot of subsequent other projects on the map and the village has a possibility to prosper in the near future.

With these positive resultats in mind we are very eager to start up our next 2008 project of 12 new class rooms on the Don Bosco literacy center in Andaung Chenh, Battambang. (see further under "planned projects")
